Protecting Yourself

As much as people hate to think of it, hacking attacks happen all the time, and there is very little that can be done about it. Sure, an antivirus is a great line of defense, but with the ever increasing complexity of attack out there, nothing is bullet proof.

Microsoft wants to make you feel a little better about that fact. A new feature in the Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection anti-hacking tool will alert you if you have in fact fallen victim to a hacking attack, and therefore reduce the collateral damage that can be caused by this type of devastating attack.

According to Microsoft the new tool will analyze information available from over a billion Windows devices, 2.5 trillion websites, and over a million suspicious files in its databases. If they feel that you are falling victim to one of these attack they will send you a notification in real time, in hopes that you can do something to stop the attack before it gets too far along. This is a huge advantage over a notification after the fact, when the damage is already done and there is not much you can do.

According to Microsoft it can take a corporate customer up to 200 days to recognize a security breach and another 80 to contain it. This type of attack can cost the company up to $12 million in damages, and with the new tool this could be reduced greatly.
